Due to an issue in the nvhpc compiler, I can't merge this change with master yet. Actually, I don't think that master itself will compile with the recent nvhpc compiler. I'll do some more testing with 25.3 compiler when it's out in a couple of weeks

Let me know when you think this MR is ready.
