3d: reduced level of detail for high resolution

Going to 3d in high-res would lead to many cells that potentialy expensive to render for paraview. Paraview is able to reduce the level-of-detail (LOD) which does (for my understanding) a subsampling of the grid.

Does this work also for Catalyst?
Does this reduce the data already on the compute nodes (in parallel)?
