* When the maintainer mode is enabled and when there are Makefile.am in the same
  directories where the headers reside.

* The C compiler selection got some major updates in both releases.

* Recent versions of shellcheck added some checks not yet
  passed by the code.

* The prefix separation was meant to speed up the pattern matching
  and eventually ensure substitution only happens once.

* macOS no longer (since 10.9) includes gnutar, try to use gtar,
  the name it's installed by brew and ports.
