AWI FESOM2 CMORization in general

In our meeting from 2023-06-15, we agreed to consider the following, until a tool exists to CMORize FESOM2 data (that tool would preferably be an extension of the Seamore-Tool used to CMORize FESOM1 data for CMIP6):
- Publish the unstructured FESOM2 data more or less in its raw format via DOKU or WDCC
- Publish FESOM2 data remapped to a regular lat lon grid via the ESGF as part of the PalMod project
The regridded data could be stored under /work/bk1192
. Currently, disk space of 150T is available in that project. It would be great if the remapping script can eventually be shared with us (or even be made public via the DOKU / WDCC project that holds the unstructured raw data).
As the next step, AWI will discuss the target grid (eg. 0.25° resolution regular lat lon grid). For the CMORization we require the following information for the target grid:
- bounds and midpoints of the horizontal grid
- bounds and midpoints of the vertical grid
- best: remapping scheme (eg. "nearest neighbour") for horizontal/vertical remapping and tool used (would be added to the CMOR metadata)
For the CMORization, variable mapping information will be necessary for the FESOM2/REcoM ocean and ocean-biogeochemistry variables.
This information can be entered in the Variable Mapping WebGUI (Login required - in the following the direct links to each submodel, but each submodel can as well be navigated to manually via https://c6dreq.dkrz.de -> Tab Variable Mapping
-> Project PalMod2
-> Select AWI-ESM submodel and click Edit
):
I created extra submodel entries for the regular lat-lon grid, in case the mapping information deviates from the unstructured grid variant (eg. other filenames, variable names, etc.). If there are just minimal and consistent deviations (eg. filename has additional suffix _0pt25deg
), it is not needed to enter the mapping information for both variants. If anything is unclear, we can enter the information together in a zoom meeting, at least for a few exemplary variables.
As of now, only few ocean biogeochemistry variables are part of the PalMod variable list. Please request the addition of more variables by creating a new issue. Easiest is the addition of CMIP6 variables to the PalMod variable list, since that is basically a copy&paste. A full list of all CMIP6 variables is available here: https://clipc-services.ceda.ac.uk/dreq/index/CMORvar.html
Please use this issue thread to post questions or to track the progress regarding Seamore for FESOM2 and FESOM2 regridding.
